Wistia videos are supported on most browsers and devices, but as you build your audience, you may have concerns about how viewers can stream your content. Read on to familiarize yourself with Wistia’s viewing requirements.

If you can play both, your computer and browser are in great shape to view Wistia media. If not, check out our supported browsers section below.

Supported operating systems

Wistia is friendly with almost every OS we know, including Mac OS, Windows, and Linux. Wistia media also play smoothly on mobile devices and tablets.

It’s important to note that there are some nuances to viewing on Windows devices, which we’ll detail below.

Supported browsers

Tip

It’s essential to keep your browser as up to date as possible. Wistia works hard to support many browser iterations, but sometimes changes beyond our control (i.e., security issues, playback support) can force us to stop supporting specific environments unexpectedly.

Note

As of December 31st, 2020, Adobe has officially stopped supporting Flash Player. Wistia does not support playback using Flash.

Wistia media can be played on any browser that supports HTML5. For videos specifically, HTML5 is indicated by an MP4 file type with an H.264 codec. In most cases, Wistia (and most of the internet) defaults to HTML5.

Media playback works with all major browsers, including Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Microsoft Edge.

Windows support

Microsoft stopped supporting Windows 7 in 2020. If you're experiencing playback issues on Windows 7, try using Firefox or updating Chrome. However, the best option is to upgrade to the newest Windows 7 release or a newer Windows version.

Mobile OS support

Most mobile devices only support HTML5 playback, which is Wistia’s default for mobile. This includes Android phones and tablets (4.1 and up) and iOS devices like iPhones and iPads.

We have found the most consistent support on all iOS and Android devices running version 2.2 or later. Keep in mind that mobile devices will typically force video playback through their native player.

Internet connection and speed

The minimum viable connection speed to stream Wistia media reliably is about 768 kilobits per second (equal to .768 megabits per second). We recommend a connection speed of at least 5 megabits per second for an optimal experience with HD capability.

Review our export settings guide for more information on preparing your media for the best performance and details on how Wistia optimizes the playback experience for each viewer.
