Content Standards Policy

This guide walks you through the types of content you can and can't upload to Wistia.

Written by Caroline F

Why this policy exists

Wistia’s mission is to harness the power of video to help make business more human. And, because businesses rely on Wistia for creating and sharing videos, we’d like to clarify some ground rules. To ensure that the wistia.com domain remains available for all viewers, we prohibit content that corporations would commonly block on their own networks. Beyond that, we try to be conscientious about the kinds of content we help release into the wild; it affects the video-friendly world we’re working hard to create.

This policy is intended to provide clarity and context around the types of content prohibited on Wistia. If you violate this policy (or our Terms of Service), your account may be suspended or terminated. We also believe that context is important. That’s why we try to avoid removing content that is educational, scientific, or artistic in nature.

If you have any doubts or concerns about the classification of your videos, please email [email protected] with your questions. Our team will give you an honest assessment of the material and whether or not it should live on Wistia.

Note

This policy exists in addition to the Prohibited Uses clause (2.6) of the Wistia Terms.

For this reason, our policy on hate and discrimination extends beyond content. We will ban accounts connected with a mission or history of action that is hateful, harassing, demeaning, or discriminatory, particularly when this activity targets others based on a generalized category of identity: age, disability, ethnicity, religion, race, sexual orientation, or gender.

How to report content violations

We have two dedicated channels for reporting a possible violation or abuse of our Content Standards policy, Terms of Agreement, or an instance of copyright infringement:

  • [email protected] for content that may be in violation of the above policy, or against the Prohibited Use clause (2.6) of the Wistia Terms.

  • [email protected] if you are a copyright holder and wish to register a copyright infringement/DMCA complaint regarding someone else hosting for which you own the rights.

Our team actively monitors these inboxes and will aim to evaluate and respond to each claim within 2 weeks of receipt. Each case will be considered in context, using the above guidelines to determine whether or not the content should be removed.

Content Standards Policy FAQ

What if my account was flagged or banned by mistake?

Wistia automatically reviews content on some new accounts, and occasionally a legitimate account is flagged in error. If you believe your account was suspended or your media removed by mistake, email [email protected] with your account URL and a link to the affected video(s). Our team will review the content in context and restore access if it doesn't violate this policy.

Can a ban be reversed?

Violations of this policy are generally final and not reversible. Each case is reviewed in context. If your account was banned and you have additional questions, email [email protected] and we'll tell you specifically which media triggered the action and whether it can be reinstated.

"We're having trouble verifying your email" at signup

If you see a message like "Beep boop. Cannot compute. We're having trouble verifying your email," this is a separate, automated check on the email address or domain used to sign up—not a content violation. If you've reached this in error, reply to the verification prompt or reach out to our team and we'll authenticate your email.
