Burnt-in Captions

Generate stylized, burnt-in captions on your video using the Wistia Editor.

Written by Hanna

Add burnt-in captions

To add burnt-in captions to a video, navigate to your desired video, then click "Edit" and open the Captions panel. From here, you can choose from a variety of branded caption styles and fonts.

Toggle the setting on to generate burnt-in captions for your video. If you stitch another media to your edit session with captions enabled, captions will automatically be added to the new media as well. Burnt-in captions will always be visible in Wistia and in video downloads.

Note

Burnt-in captions generated via Social Clips cannot be edited.

Caption presets

In the "Presets" tab of the Captions panel, select from a variety of existing caption styles.

Hovering over a preset will allow you to preview the animation style, and clicking it will apply the preset to your video. You can adjust the appearance to your liking with our style options.

Caption style

Click the caption text in the video preview, then open each dropdown menu to customize the color, size, font, style, and position.

Note

The caption style you choose will be applied to the entire video and cannot be altered for a specific clip or segment.

In the "Style" tab of the Captions panel, you'll find more granular text design controls.

These controls include the following:

  • Optimize word count for social

  • Font size

  • Text alignment

  • Capitilization

  • Stroke weight

  • Text shadow

  • Text background

  • Text animation

Edit burnt-in captions

If you need to make a small edit to your burnt-in captions and transcript, open the Transcript panel within the editor, double-click any word in the transcript, then click "Correct word."

Note

Currently, only one word can be corrected at a time within the editor. More significant corrections to the transcript should be made from the media page.

Any corrections made here will be automatically reflected in burned-in captions, and the updated transcript will be reflected on the media page as well (once you export).

Remove burnt-in captions

To remove burnt-in captions from your video, open the Captions panel in the editor and toggle the setting to the Off position.
