On this page, we’ll cover the different customization options for both audio and video and explain how to use Customize.
Once you customize your video, you can also choose to embed it with your customizations.
Wistia offers a lot of robust tools to make your online content your own. This includes (but isn't limited to) changing the player color, choosing your own thumbnail, adding and removing buttons, autoplaying your video, and adding interactive elements like lead generation tools to keep your viewers engaged with your content.
Customize is where all of this lives, and should be your first stop after uploading a media. Let’s dive in!
Note
These customizations are specific to the video player and while some overlap with the audio player, not all of them are applicable there. Annotation Links, Calls to Actions, Turnstiles, and Passwords cannot be applied to audio. If you’ve gotten started with podcasting and want to explore the customization options specific to audio episodes, head on over to Customizing an Audio Episode!
Customize
To get starting customizing your video, click "Customize" from the lefthand side menu.
From here, you'll see all of the options available to customize your media.
Click into each option to adjust customizations. Once you make a chance, the options to "Save" or "Discard" your changes will appear.
Appearance and brand
The first step in making your media truly your own is to update the appearance. Here, you can updates things like the player color, corners, and your branding. Check out our full Appearance guide for a walkthrough.
You also have the option to limit the spectrum of player colors that you can choose from. This gives you color options that are accessible and high visibility, therefore improving the viewing experience for those with visual and/or color impairment.
Thumbnail
The thumbnail is the first thing a viewer sees when they land on the page with your media (whether it's your Wistia media page, or a webpage where you've embedded your video). Set the image or a brief video loop you’d like to appear before the video is played here!
Head over to the Thumbnail page for a full breakdown.
Controls
The Controls area allows you to tweak the player controls on your video or audio player. Here, you’ll be able to control a good amount of your audience’s experience, such as the size of the play button, settings options available to your visitors, and more.
Check out our Controls page to learn more.
Audio description
This is where you can set up an audio description for your video, to make it more accessible for members of your audience listening to your content.
Head to the page on Audio descriptions to learn more.
Share
With sharing turned on, this allows you to give your audience the option to share your content within their own network. You can let your audience share via embed, on Facebook, X and more.
Check out the Share page for more details.
Annotation links
Annotation links let you show a link to your viewers without interrupting the video. You can choose to have them display in the upper right or left corner of your video, set a start and end time, and more. You can also add multiple annotation link to display at different time through your video. Edit the length of your annotation link via the "Start" and "End" text boxes, or the timeline below the video.
Check out the Annotations page for more.
Call to action
A Call to action is a clickable message that directs your viewers to what you’d like them to do next. You can place a Call to action at any point in your video, and customize the type and text.
To learn more about Calls to action, check out this page.
Turnstile
A Turnstile is Wistia’s email collection tool. Using a Turnstile, you can add a form to your video to collect email addresses and names from your viewers. You can even connect a Turnstile to your email integration so that you can reach out to these interested viewers later with targeted information.
There are multiple customizations you can make to a Turnstile, including what the form asks for, upper and lower text, and more. You can adjust the time it appears in your video via the "Time" text box or by dragging the Turnstile icon on the timeline below your video.
To learn more, check out the Turnstile page.
Password
Gate your video with a password to limit who can play it.
Check out the Password page for more.
Chapters
Adding chapters to your long or short-form content is a great way to organize it and help your audience navigate it. They can watch or listen to the content that’s most interesting or relevant to them!
You can generate chapters through AI, which will automatically organize them for you. When manually adding your own chapters, you can set the time via the text box, or click to a point in your media's timeline and then click "Add chapter."
The Chapters page has all of the details.
Marketing Automation Integration Form
If you have a Marketing Automation Integration included in your plan, and you've connected it and set it to be your primary integration, then you'll have the option to add a form from that platform to your video. You can set a time for the form to appear in the "Time" box, or by dragging the icon on the timeline.
Check this page to learn more about the marketing automation integrations we offer.
Customization FAQ
What if I want my medias to appear differently (i.e. have different customizations) in two different places?
Each version of the media in your account will only have one set of customizations. To have the same media with different customizations, you will need to create a new instance of the media.
The quickest way to do this is with the Move & Copy tool. Create a copy of your media, and start applying new customizations to it!
You said customizations would show up on X, but what about Facebook?
Unfortunately, because of the limitations of Facebook embedding, we are not able to push all of your awesome video customizations over there. Right now we can only embed a thumbnail image that links out to your video. This still has the benefit of driving traffic to your site, but if you want the full functionality of the Facebook player we recommend uploading your videos there natively.
What customization features are available for my podcast episodes?
You can customize the player color, upload episode art, configure sharing settings, and add chapters!
Note
The button and player color set from the Channel’s Appearance menu overrides the individual video’s player colors only within the context of the Channel. For example: if your video’s player color is blue but you set the Button and player color for your Channel to orange, the player color will be orange when you view your video in the Channel and be blue on your video’s Wistia media page.
